We are bombarded with discussions and perspectives on artificial intelligence, but it is often depicted as intangible and immaterial – formless bodies of knowledge, code, and thought existing in immaterial spaces. Nevertheless, AI is a deeply physical technology steeped in geography, place, and space. This piece presents a precise deconstruction of a very present yet often undiscussed AI technology – a Roomba-style floor cleaner; the newest versions of which not only clean but also collect data about new spaces and use AI-based navigation systems. In doing so, this floor cleaner and its constituent parts, laid to bare, demonstrate the deeply physical and embodied elements of AI and AI technologies in everyday life. The piece asks viewers to consider their own images of AI and think critically about the forms AI technologies can and do take.
